Our second wall-hanging shows the history of whisky on the islands of Islay and Jura. This was completed in time for the millennium and won us 1st prize in the group effort at the Scottish Quilt Show in Perth, Scotland in 1999.

This hanging was made possible through the generosity of the distillers of Islay and Jura.
designed by Jane Taylor
The Islay Quilters was formed after a very well attended patchwork and quilting demonstration, orginised by the Islay Arts Association.
Enthusiasm was inspired and a group of ladies got together to form their own quilting group.  The first meeting being held in the Harbour Inn, Bowmore. 16th January 1993.
It was agreed that there should be three main aims for the group.

1. To generate an interest in quilting and associated needlework (e.g. such as patchwork and applique) by pooling ideas, experience and resources.
2. To make quilts as a group to raise money for various local charities as well as making our own individual items.
3. To enjoy ourselves.

Once we were established, we then decided to do something useful with our talents and make a charity quilt, this quilt was then raffled at the islands annual agricultural show and the money made was given to good causes within the islands of Islay and Jura.
We have since gone from strength to strength

Three wall hangings and 10 charity quilts later, we have expanded so much that we have now hired a workshop in Islay House Square
