In early October 2001, I received an email from quilters in America asking us to help make squares that would be put together as a memorial in rememberence of that terrible day
Tuesady11th September 2001
As people we felt privilaged to be able to show how much this act of terrorism affected us even in Scotland.
Squares that tell a story
Sally's square
'Lament the past and hope for the future UK and USA together'
Suzanne's square
The candle a symbol of HOPE a light in the darkness
showing the flag of America with a sprig of 'Rosemary' for 'Remembrance'
Claire's square
Here our national flag, the Flag of St. Andrew
is shown flying at half-mast
Isobel's square
'Urnaighean as Ile' translates as
'Prayers from Islay'
When the disaster took place, members of the Islay Quilters were actually at the workshop. My husband phone to tell what was happening. We listened in horror to the radio unable to take in the true horror of the disaster.
Maureen's square
'a light out of darkness' sentiments from the daughter of a lighthouse keeper, who knows that even in the darkest night, a light still shines.
Rae's square
shows both countries represented by hearts, the heather a symbol of 'Hope'
in Scotland.
