Shepherds crook like many things have their own stories and legends.
A shepherd who dies would have his crook placed into the coffin with him so that when he reached heaven there would be a place for him, as God would know the reason he seldom was able to attend church was because he had been in the hills with his sheep.
Another story is a coin should be place somewhere in the crook so that if the shepherd died up in the hills he would have a coin to pay the 'ferry-man'.
Above you will see several different crooks including one in the shape of a Trout, the shafts are made of different woods, and here I show my ignorance by being unable to tell you what kind.
